Hardcover. Etat : Good-. 1st Edition. Original cloth, gilt. 304pp. b/w portrait frontis.; 59 col. plates. Spine and covers shelf-worn, bumped and rubbed, spine a little sunned. Front joint cracked w. ffep and frontispiece being detached. Heavy foxing to endpapers and prelims; text and plates less affected and mainly limited to margins. Red stain to bottom margins of plates 1 to 4; occasional grubby mark; some foxing to outer edges of text block, a few hinges cracked but binding still sound. Altogether, a good copy. Heavy volume (1.87 kg) ? UK and overseas orders may require additional postage.

Etat : Very good. Large octavo: xxiv, 304pp., frontispiece and 60 chromo-litho plates. A very good copy in original cloth. Internally a little marginal foxing but much less than usual with this book.

Henry Seebohm's classic of British Oology, with 60 (1-58, 58a, 59) full page chromolithographic plates with illustrations of hundreds of British bird eggs, beautifully realised; accompanied by descriptive notes on the nests and eggs, and with systematic index; b&w frontispiece plate of Seebohm; edited by R. Bowdler Sharpe, published shortly after Seebohm's death in 1895; Bowdler Sharpe also provides a memoir prior to the text; maroon cloth boards with gilt titling to front and spine, maroon endpapers; this copy with the bookplate of Hugh Cecil (Lowther) Earl of Lonsdale - Lonsdale was an English Peer, explorer, and founder of the Automobile Association; a fanatical sportsman he donated the original Lonsdale Belts in 1909 for championship boxing (Lonsdale later becoming a brand of boxing equipment), and was director of Arsenal FC in 1936; from 1929 he was joint editor of the Lonsdale Library of Sports, Games and Pastimes; he lived a generally dissolute lifestyle and was never far from scandal; small bookshop label, vertical crease to frontispiece plate near gutter, further creases to rear endpaper; light-med foxing to prelims and title page, text block toned, very occasional foxing in text, o.w. Very Good throughout; mild shelfwear to boards, two vertical strips of front board sun-faded. no dustwrapper. 304pp. 8vo. Very Good (front board sunned).

HB. 2 vols, large-4to (390x295mm), orig. half morocco, raised bands to spine, gilt tooling and titles to compartments, top edges gilt, others uncut. Some scuffing and a little wear to head caps and corners, but an attractive set. Text and plates clean, with just a little occasional limited foxing to tissue guards. Recent book-plates of J.G. van Marle. First edition. Fine hand-coloured lithographic plates, heightened in gum arabic by and after renowned bird illustrator, J.G. Keulemans, printed by Hanhart, Mintern Brothers or Judd and Co. The work was only partly finished at the time of Seebohm's death in 1895 and was edited and completed by H. Bowdler Sharpe. 'A thorough monograph of a limited section of the family Turdidae . Several new species are described. The hand-colored plates by Keulemans are excellent.' Two volume set with engraved frontispiece portrait and 149 hand-coloured lithographed plates by and after J.G. Keuelemans. Folio. Hardbacks. TEG. Portrait tissue-guard showing some creasing. Only very occasional, very minor spotting, and a little off-setting, o/w. contents exceptionally clean and fine. Contemporary green half-morocco, spines gilt decorated and lettered, over green cloth boards, gently sunned on spines, in excellent, nr. fine condition. A very pleasing set indeed. "A thorough monograph of a limited section of the family Turdidae . Several new species are described. The hand-coloured plates by Keulemans are excellent" (Zimmer). Seebohm passed away in 1895. By that time had overseen completion of most of the plates, but the supporting text was unfinished. Richard Bowdler Sharpe s subsequent contribution ensured that the work was published.
