Perhaps Selden s best known work, compiled by his private secretary, Richard Milward, it was not first printed until 1689, when the Revolution had given freedom to the press. Although its authenticity was at one point disputed, "the work may safely be accepted as the most vivid picture extant of the habits of thought and the modes of expression of the great Erastian lawyer. The conversations cover a great range of subjects relative to human life and history ". (DNB) "The book abounds in sallies of all kinds. Selden unmercifully mocks at everything and everyone, Parliament and Royalists, Episcopalians and Presbyterians. His sarcasms at the expense of the Chancellor and of Equity have become proverbial ". (Lévy-Ullmann; quoted in Marke) Keynes p. 88. cfMarke p. 1126.

Errata leaf inscribed by "Thomas Randolph C.C.C" and dated 11 October 1736; his inscription noted on front flyleaf in a later hand. Thomas Randolph, Doctor of Divinity of Corpus ChristiCollege at Oxford, was a well-published theologian and president of the College from 1748. Randolph wrote several works on Christian apologetics and theology, which engaged in the relevant discourses of his time; he was archdeacon of Oxford until his death in 1783. Elzevir edition, or first reprinting, of John Selden s oft overlooked work on the mythological religions of the ancient world; first published by Guilielmus Stansbeius in London in 1617. With this work, John Selden, English jurist and scholar of early law, sought to collect all extant information on ancient Near Eastern religions; his work represents the first serious effort to deal with polytheistic faiths by a non-classicist. Selden began his massive task as early as 1605, drawing from the Bible and various other classical, rabbinic, and patristic sources, particularly those from Syria, Arabia, Egypt and Persia. The De Diis Syris was written as one part preservation of these early sources, recapturing important literature like the nearly forgotten creation myths of ancient Phoenicia, and one part promotion of the idea that all religion stems from the ancient Near East. Notably, Selden presented his Stuart English contemporaries with a pagan background of the Bible, an uncommon idea for his time. The editor, Daniel Heinsius, was a Dutch humanist who was closely associated with Selden during his time in London. Through Heinsius this was the first reprinting of the De Diis Syris in Leiden in 1629. The celebrated Dutch printers Elzevir, especially the firm of Bonaventure and Abraham, were known for their elegant printings. OCLC locates several copies in North America at Rutgers, the Smithsonian, Jacob Burns Law Library, Houghton Library, Univ. of Chicago, Newberry Library, Emory, Univ. of Illinois, Univ. of Arizona, Univ. of Washington, the Huntington Library, UCLA, and Graduate Theological Union Library.
