Octavo, pp. [i-iv] v-xii 1-257 [258: printer's imprint] [259-266: ads] [267-268: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original mustard cloth, front and rear panels stamped in blind, spine panel stamped in gold. First edition in English. Part of Chatto's "Phoenix Library," a slim pocket-sized line which reprinted some of their more popular books as well as launching new material. Twenty-two wry and satirical fables by this nineteenth-century author, "the greatest of Russian satirists," according to the translator. This material comes from SKASKI, a collection of the author's literary fairy tales. Includes a 6-page introduction by the translator. Also of interest to students of fantastic literature is Shchedrin's novel ISTORIYA ODNOGO GORODA [CHRONICLES OF A CITY], 1869-1870, "an unsurpassed classic of Russian dystopia in embryo" - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 1037. Ettlinger and Gladstone, Russian Literature, Theatre and Art: A Bibliography of Works in English, Published Between 1900-1945, p. 74. Spine panel just a bit darkened, a very good copy. (#113963).
