Author's presentation inscription to front free endpaper. Half-title reads: Cape Town: A Record of the Mother City from the Earliest Days to the Present. 4to; original red rexine, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt title and crest to upper cover; pictorial dustwrapper; pictorial endpapers; pp. (xvi) + 654; profusely illustrated. Portion missing from top edge of dustwrapper, with earlier owner's repairs to reverse side; spine a little sunned at head. Very good condition. "1963 marks the Golden Jubilee of Greater Cape Town, the fiftieth anniversary of the unification of eight of those municipalities that today constitute the Mother City. To commemorate the event, the City Council authorised the publication of this volume and for the past two and a half years it has been my aim faithfully to record the impressive story of Cape Town from its earliest days to the present; to place between the covers of this book a comprehensive account of its municipal, commercial and industrial endeavours, and so provide the citizens of today and tomorrow with a fair record of those who, together with their achievements, constitute the history of the City.".

Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Special Edition. 1159 (complete). Presentation copy. Numbered 183. "Presented on behalf of the City of Johannesburg To His Worship the Mayor of Cape Town. Councillor R. M. Friedlander". Signed by Alf Widman (then a beloved mayor of Johannesburg). Dated in hand 1971. The presentation is as new - it is very bright and fresh. A VERY heavy book! The green cover is scuffed and rubbed, but is otherwise tight, secure, muscular and dignified. The titling is in gilt that is bright. The papertrims are marked from shelving and handling. Inside, the contents are very clean, very clear, very certain and confident. The backpapers have a small storage stain to the top spine edge. To say that the book is diligent is as useful to say that Margot Fonteyn knew how to dance. This is a massive history of the young city. It is crammed with personality and detail. A MUST for any collector of books about Johannesburg. fk. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
