Hardcover / Hardback. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Hardback. These were the words that James Whelan defiantly scratched on his tin food plate as he lay in the Ottawa jail in 1868. Others were not so sure that his guilt had still to be proved. For, from the moment when D'Arcy McGee, leading spokesman against the Irish-American Fenians, was shot down at night outside his door, everyone had excitedly assumed that the assassin must be a Fenian. According to the police, Whelan was a Fenian. So it all seemed very clear - on the day of his arrest a Montreal newspaper's headline screamed, "No Doubt Whelan Guilty." At time of this book's publication, more than 100yrs later, doubts persisted. Was Whelan a cold-blooded assassin who got his just deserts? Or was he an innocent man who was convicted and executed - in the last public execution held in Canada - because the Government needed a conviction to settle the McGee case? Was Whelan guilty? With 16pp. of photographs, and drawings by the author, Bibliog., Notes and Index. 414pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Nr. F. in vg. pcdw.

Hardcover / Hardback. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. Hardback. When the new Dominion of Canada was less than a year old, it was rocked by its first political assassination. Thomas D'Arcy McGee was a politician, a poet, and one of the Fathers of Confederation. He had a rare talent for getting along with all members of the fractious House of Commons. D'Arcy McGee was murdered on April 6, 1868. It was Canada's first political assassination. Within 24 hours, police had arrested James Patrick Whelan, whom they assumed to be a Fenian. In his pocket they found a revolver, which had recently been fired. Whelan was hanged in front of a crowd of 5,000 people for the murder. It was the last public hanging in Canada. Illus. by the author, Bibliog. and Index. 527pp. lge. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Black cloth/gilt titles. Vg. A fairly heavy book which may require additional postage.
