Blue cloth over board with paste-on colour illustration in black margin. The same illustration on dust jacket. Large type. Page 55 ff a vertical soft fold in pages; otherwise the book is unusually good and clean for a children's book. Dust jacket with several tears and some loss.

Full leather-bound edition reissued in 1981 as a reproduction from the original 1919 edition and is limited to 500 copies of which this is number 364. Dark green leather bound hard cover with no wear, but some fading of spine and rear board leaving a rather attractive brown colour. Gilt titles and decorations on front and spine. Clean interior with ix, 240 gilt edged pages possibly unopened, and 12 colour plates including frontispiece illustrated by Jessie Wilcox Smith. Published in 1981 this attractively illustrated limited reproduction edition is in near fine to fine condition.

Publisher's grey cloth with red titles and decoration to spine and upper. Matching grey endpapers with red decoration. With the grey illustrated dust-jacket. Heavy spotting to edges and preliminaries. Occasional creases to leaves. Spotting to spine, and a few light marks and bumps to boards. Heavy rubbing, chipping and creasing to price-clipped jacket, with some large closed tears. Rare with the jacket. Very good. One of the American artist's best-regarded sets of illustrations, first published in 1916.
