Cracking to gutters, with exposed netting. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Soft crushing to spine ends. Notable tanning to spine and edges. White marks to boards. Textblock is shaky.

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good -. Second Edition. Intact, but disbound from a larger collection. This copy belonged to the Unitarian minister, Rev. Joseph Tuckerman and was given to him by Mr. E. J. Reid of London, dated July 8th, 1837 - as inscribed on the top of the title page. A 54 page publication on the early 19th century Church of Scotland and its turmoil over the question of lay patronage and its implications regarding civil authority over the church. The upheaval in the Church prompted numerous writings and treatises, of which this is one. Book.

Cloth. Etat : Poor. No Jacket. Corners of boards and top and bottom edges of spine are badly bumped. Cloth of front cover has several wrinkles, one on back board. There are three small white spots on the front cover. Front end paper is splitting down the middle at the binding, which is loosening from the boards. There are two stickers on the front end paper from the private library of the previous owner, 3 1/2" by 1 3/4" and 2 1/4" by 1." There are also two stamps on the front end paper, "This book is the property of." First several pages are spotted and loosening. Text edges are also spotted. There are also several pages near the back with spotting. Text appears clean. No apparent date, however this book appears quite old, turn of the last century perhaps? Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Bound in the original brown cloth, with blind-stamped decorations. Gilt lettering on the spine has faded some but is still legible. The following quotation comes from Smith's entry in the DNB: "His drollery produced uproarious merriment. Mackintosk is described as rolling on the floor, and his servants had often to leave the room in fits of laughter.
