Contemporary calf, gilt spine, on marbled boards. This second edition of the work (first published in 1738, see Barbier) provides many corrections which the author notes in the preface might have put the reader of the first edition in awkward situations. Backgammon, is said to be the 'oldest known recorded game in man's history . In 1743 an Englishman called Edmond Hoyle documented and standardised the rules of the game. Backgammon then became popular in many European countries. "Tric-Trac" in France, "Puff" Germany, mostly followed these rules . These rules remained unchanged till 1931 when in America they were revised to what generally governs the game today'. ('Salar's Backgammon', salnet.demon.co.uk). A well preserved crisp copy, one or two tiny foxing marks. Old inscription inside front cover dated '20 mars 1883'.

Second edition. Second edition. 271 woodcut game board diagrams in text. [6], 323, [1]pp. 8vo. Souymille's book is the first important modern book on the subject, and is considered the first illustrated book on backgammon. It was first published in Avignon in 1738; and again in this second edition 2 years later after Hoyle began to codify the rules for the English-speaking audience. As Soumille says in the Preface "I am not the first to write on the subject of the game, but I do believe that no one has precede me in my aim of aiding the imagination by visual means.that is to say, by accompanying the instructions with a series of images which clearly represent the moves." The woodcuts are incredibly graphic works of art, and defined the look of backgammon books to this day. Barbier II: 565 Contemporary mottled french calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Provenance: Suremain of Bourgogne (bookplate, Quaintain no. 1049) 271 woodcut game board diagrams in text. [6], 323, [1]pp. 8vo.

Agréable exemplaire, malgré quelques légères piqûres. Plein veau d'époque, dos à 5 nerfs, finement orné et doré, pièce de titre rouge. Tranches rouges. With numerous woodcut illustrations within text (some full-page). First edition of an early treatise on backgammon. Soumille was a secular priest and an amateur scientist, who invented machines and a new model of thermometer. His attention apparently went to games and he was also the author of books on lottery. The present work is the first complete treatise on backgammon, a game of Chinese origin, which enjoyed vast popularity in France and other European countries. In the preface Soumille asserts that this book is not the first publication on the subject, but it is certainly one of the earliest illustrated ones. The book was frequently reprinted. Barbier, II, 565; Quérard, France littéraire, IX, p.230.
