Frankfurt (Francofurti ad Moenum), Sumptibus Joannis Davidis Zunneri, 1690, first edition, one of two volumes, large 4to., full leather binding, ribbed spine, gold tooling plus title plate on spine, [14] + 368 + [70] pp., professionally restored by Götz Bergschenhoek in 1998, some browning in textpages, some stains, but otherwise a good copy, engraved frontispiece (Samuel Bottschild inv. et deline, Ludwig Christoph Glotsch [sculp.]), printer's mark on title page (Onerata Renitor), decorative woodcut headpieces, inititals and endpieces, 23 engraved plates with several hundred coats of arms. Ex libris: Daniel de Bruin.l Philipp Jakob Spener (1635 - 1705) was a German Christian theologist known as the "Father of Pietism". Pietism is similar to puritanism and existed within the Lutheran faith. In Berlin Spener was held in high honour, but he increasingly became a subject of hostile criticism. Spener was also known as a heraldic expert.
