William Gordon Stables (1840-1910) was a Scottish-born medical doctor in the Royal Navy and a prolific author of adventure fiction, primarily for boys. He wrote over 130 books.

Colour illustrated frontispiece, illustrator not credited; and, there are numerous full-page, quarter page and vignettes black-and-white illustrations throughout. Olive green coloured cloth covered boards; coloured cameo to the front panel with black, white and red decoration surrounding it; silver coloured embossed Victoria Cross to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel, silver coloured titles against a black, white and red coloured banner and some black coloured illustrations filling in the rest of the board. Illustrated backstrip, showing a Victoria Cross in a silver colour against a black, white and red coloured decoration with silver coloured titles to the backstrip. A series of stories written for boys in mind, about daring exploits during the Boer War, from the English point of view. The book is broken into two sections, For England's Flag & for Queen and Empire  each has 10 stories each. Contributors Include Dr. Gordon Stables R.N., G. Stebbing, and Duncan McLaren. There is no easily found publication date for the book, but, there is a prize plate to the front paste-down dated December 1906. Softening, rubbing and fraying of the backstrip edges and a little to the book corners. Rubbing of the book panels and some of the gilding has rubbed away. There is a small piece missing from the left-hand edge of the cameo. Rubbing, handling marks and scrapes to the book panels. Tanning and foxing of the textblock edges with age toning of the pages and a little foxing throughout. Offset tanning in foxing to the end pages and the hinge has cracked between the frontispiece and title page with the underlying webbing visible. At various points throughout the book the book has been overstretched and the webbing is visible. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [5], 6 - 128 pages. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
