Earp's was the first English-language translation of Stendhal's last novel, published here as Volume 23 in the New Directions series "Direction." Although published when Alvin Lustig was breaking fresh ground with dust jacket designs for James Laughlin at New Directions, this dust jacket design, uniform in the "Direction" series of 16mo reprints of modern classics, is uncredited. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .
