First Dublin edition. 216 pp. A series of 39 letters written by L. Sterne dating from July 1764 to August 1766. Previous owner's inscription on ffep. Armorial plate of Esher on fep. Browning around margins of text only. Full brown leather with gilt rule on spine. Original spine replaced. No lettering on spine. Edges and corners of boards chipped and rubbed. Overall condition Good+.

Etat : Good. 6 vols. 16 mo. Mottled calf, covers and spines restored. Frontispiece after Hogarth. Publisher's ad: "a New Edition, complete in 6 vols. Price 18s. bound." Signed by and bookplate of William Henry Shirreff. Lowndes, Vol. V, p. 2510."Shirreff entered the Navy in 1796, was promoted to lieutenant in 1804 and to captain in 1809. Between 1817 and 1821 he commanded the Andromache in the Pacific, at the time of the Chilean War of Independence. He also despatched Edward Bransfield (ca.1783-1852), Master of the Andromache, in the hired ship Williams of Blyth to claim the South Shetland Islands, 1819 to 1820, for Britain. Between 1830 and 1837 Shirreff was Captain of the Port of Gibraltar under the Colonial Service. In 1838 he was appointed to Captain-Superintendent of Deptford Victualling Yard. He was promoted to rear-admiral in 1846.
