Eight pages, complete; with an introduction by Vincent Starrett. Inscribed in black ink by Ashton Stevens to Gene Fowler, a New Year message: "Love, Literature and a Happy New Year to the great Gene Fowler, here in our tenement on Jan. 1, 1949, from Flo-Flo and the 1/2 dramatist, Ashton Stevens." Pages and covers are very clean and intact. A comedic sketch about a husband and wife, Farquar and Agatha Winterbottom, who face dire circumstances when they are attacked by hostile natives. Ashton Stevens (1872-1951) was an American drama critic who was well-acquainted with many famous playwrights and stage performers. Gene Markey (1895-1980) was an American author, producer, and screenwriter who was familiar with the Hollywood scene. Vincent Starrett (1886-1974) was an American writer, journalist, and bibliophile. Gene Fowler (1890-1960) was a famous American writer, journalist, and dramatist. Inscribed by Author(s).

A collection of noted Chicago columnist Stevens's articles and interviews with notable figures in the theatre, many of them part of Chicago's renaissance including Ethel Barrymore, Sophie Tucker, and notably Black tenor William Warfield ("Mr. Warfield Declines a Million"). Theatre scholar Lorraine Brickman's copy, with her signature on the free endpaper and no other marks. A clean, unmarked, bright copy.

The five page introduction by Starrett puts the entire story in perspective. With the bookplate of Adrian Homer Goldstone on the front pastedown. Goldstone (1897-1977) was the noted bibliophile who also authored the bibliographies of Steinbeck and Machen. This is a variant copy that is 1/2 inch taller than the previous copy described and 1/4 inch thinner. Foxed along inner gutters. patterned paper-covered boards, paper cover label.

An about very good copy in paper covered boards with some wear to the corners and spine ends. Signed and warmly inscribed at the time of publication: To Claudia- One 'Colonel's Lady' to another- with love from Ashton Christmas 1948." The recipient was drama critic Claudia Cassidy who was good friends with Stevens. Laid in is a three page typed copy of a review/ press release about the publication of this book with a pencil inscription from Stevens to Cassidy as well. A terrific association copy between these two Chicago writers.

First edition. Inscribed by the author and illustrator, with an original drawing by the illustrator. Publisher's original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine and upper board. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, the boards and spine showing only the lightest wear. The contents, with the inner front hinge cracked but holding are otherwise clean and bright throughout. Inscribed by the author in blue ink on the front endpaper "To Francois Dupré / with friendship and in / admiration - Ashton Stevens / Chicago / December / 1924" underneath which Gene Markey has drawn an original illustration of the recipient with two ladies titled "François Dupré et les seestair". The recipient was a French hotelier, art collector and horse breeder. Ashton Stevens was a prominent drama critic, while Gene Markey was a journalist who went on to become a Hollywood screenwriter and producer.
