Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. P.B. Adams (illustrateur). 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, The Reilly & Lee Co.= NAP). Signed and inscribed by Ms. Stewart on the first front end paper. The inscription reads: 'Merry Christmas to The Wilcox children from the author Grace Bliss Stewart, 1935.' The book is dedicated to 'Jessie McCutcheon Raleigh, Creator Of The Good Fairy.' The author writes 'This little tale is the romance of an idea, which is symbolized in the statuette of the Good Fairy, the idea of life and joy and health. Thousands of believing folk, both large and small, have welcomed the statuette, and now comes the Story of the Good Fairy. May it find a niche in many hearts.' Merrily, this book has enjoyed a restful and joyous life and is thus in very good health. You can see the covers in the photos. The gilt lettering and design on the front cover is quite bright. On the spine it's pretty bright as well (see photos). There is a smallish discoloration off the front top edge just above the letters 'd' and 'F'. It doesn't stand out, mostly blends into the green. There's also a small whitish area off the front bottom edge. The spine and rear cover look quite clean There isn't much wear. The edges are in very good shape. The bottom corners have the tiniest bit of rubbing. The spine ends have light rubbing. The book is very decently bound. The color frontispiece is cleanly detached over its top half but seems pretty securely bound over the bottom half. There is a very thin space between the blank verso of the first front end paper and the half-title page. Both pages are securely bound. I turned over all the pages, one by one, and found only two other instances where, again, there was only a very thin space between two facing pages (with an emphasis on the word 'very', hardly a space at all). And all four of those pages are very securely bound. All the pages in the book (excepting the frontispiece) are very securely bound. And having turned over all the pages, I can say with confidence that they are very clean. Also, quite impressively very bright. The paper is semi-glossy (and there is no faxing). There is a small light spot just off the bottom edge of the title page (a bit of a fingerprint?), same with the verso copyright page, in the exact same place and again, same place on the dedication and verso blank page. It's very small (see photo of title page). Other than that, I don't know that I saw more than one or two other minor spots throughout the whole book. There is no significant instance of soiling anywhere. There are no turned-down corners or placeholder creases, no significant creases at all. I noticed a little crinkling on the half-title page, nothing significant. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. There are a great many black-and-white illustrations, some are full-page. They all appeared to be in excellent condition. There are also four full-page color illustrations including the frontispiece. They all look perfectly clean and the half-detachment of the frontispiece is the only wear on any of them. Their colors are vibrant. It's pretty amazing that they could look so terrific in a book of this age. And that goes as well for the text pages. Pricing: despite the book's excellent condition, I'm pricing it at one half the cost of the least expensive signed first edition. Like Ms. Stewart writes: 'Merry Christmas.' Beside writing, Grace Bliss Stewart was a painter. She won several prizes from the Pen & Brush Club and from the artists Colony at Laconia, New Hampshire where she spent many summers. The colony now gives an annual award for best-in-show in her name. Signed by Illustrator(s).
