Octavo, original decorated green cloth. First edition. "Seven rather somber stories by a writer also known as 'J. S. of Dale.' The collection is bracketed with stories about the re-uniting of lovers after death. In 'Mrs. Knollys,' an old woman who had lost her husband years before in a climbing accident in Switzerland finds his body preserved in ice. In the very brief 'Dynevor,' a young man jumps into the sea when the woman he has loved -- from a distance -- falls in. He keeps diving to try to find her body. After one of these efforts he does not reappear. 'We waited very long, but no one spoke. That time I think her found her; for he did not come back.' The last story in particular is quite effective. The first could be considered a distant relative of the 'frozen pirate' sub-genre." - Robert Eldridge. Wright (III) 5220. Some sunning to spine panel, hairline crack along inner front hinge, a very good copy. (#114114).
