Etat : New. Soft cover. Etat : Good. A series of eighteen pamphlets published between 1929 and 1932 by Hugo Gernsback's Stellar Publishing Corporation, and seemingly edited by him. The pamphlets were either 24 or 28 pages long, and were published without cover illustrations. Most volumes contained a single novelette but a few of them had two stories. In "Science Fiction The Early Years" (pub. 1990) editor and critic E F Bleiler speculates at least some of these titles may have been rejected submissions to one or another of Gernsback's magazines; however, the Science Fiction Series (that were handed out for free in 1929) may well have helped stimulate some of the contributors into embarking upon significant careers. This is No. 3 in the series and the periodical has light wear on the cover with some stains, very light corner wear and the binding staples have worn through the spine. A previous owner wrote his name in black ink on the first page.

Hardcover. James Gunn (illustrateur). xxvi, 467 p.; front. (from portrait by James Gunn); 21.5 cm. Papers collected in this volume -- I. The authority of the Church () -- II. Catholicity () -- III. The doctrinal importance of the resurrection () -- IV. The state of the departed () -- V. Formularies and subscription to them () -- VI. Anglo-Catholic tradition () -- VII. Episcopal authority and reservation () -- VIII. The history of the subdiaconate () -- IX. Confirma- tion a prerequisite for Holy Communion () -- X. Synesius and the claims of truth () -- Appendices: I: reservation at East Grinstead; II: W.J. Birkbeck on the invocation of saints; III: Dr. Pusey and the place of the ablutions; IV: Stone's published writings -- Indices. -- `To many Stone was a mysterious figure. The legend that he resembled Melchizedek was current long before his death, and all sorts of stories were retailed about him in Oxford and elsewhere; and there is little doubt that he knew about some of these and rather enjoyed them. Rumour had it that as an undergraduate he had stroked the Merton Eight. There are better-founded traditions that he was fond of riding and that he was keen on whist. He was fifty-four when I knew him first, and by that time it would seem that the `trito-Stone' had begun to appear. Once he was asked at a meal: `Is it true, Dr. Stone, that you were seen last July in Oran, sitting outdoors drinking the wine of the country, and smoking a green cigar?' `Not necessarily green,' was the answer. When he settled down to say his thanksgiving, it seemed as if one were transported into eternity.' (from `Some personal memories, by Frederic Hood, p. xvii-xxi) Good lt. spotted orig. violet cloth.
