John Downes (1661-1719?) worked as a theatrical prompter and provided this insider's look into Restoration theatre; first published in 1708, it remains an invaluable scholarly resource. This is a Near Fine copy of the First Edition Thus, LIMITED to 650 total copies. Montague Summers (1880-1948), despite his honorific, may never actually been ordained in the Roman catholic Church. He was a serious student of the 17th century theatre and Gothic fiction, but is also remembered for his interest in the occult and Satanism. In 1928 he also published his translation of the "Malleus Maleficarum." Tan cloth binding, ruled on the front cover, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean, fresh text; this one of the 600 copies on Arnold unbleached handmade paper. Spine lightly sunned, else a Fine copy. No dustwrapper; in an archival plastic protector. First Thus. Hard Cover.
