First issue of the second of Tambimuttu's influential periodicals (the other was Poetry London); this issue has works by Campbell, Read, Auden among others. The cover illustration by Alexander Calder is striking; Tambimuttu used the Lyrebird as the name of a later publishing venture.

These issues feature a particularly prestigious group of contributors, including W. H. Auden, Gregory Corso, Roy Campbell, Jack Kerouac, Anne Ridler, Karl Shapiro, Elizabeth Jennings, Robin Skelton, Charles Dunlop, James Merrill, Hayden Carruth, and many others. Both from the home of a tobacco smoker, with attendant tanning to spine / covers. No. 4's cover is rather frail, with considerable separation on the outer extremities of each staple and a chip to front fore-edge. Offset tanning to No. 3. No. 4 with a slight bump to upper corners, Bindings otherwise fairly sound. Both with crisp, bright and unmarked pages. Overall good+ condition.

Meary James Thurairajah Tambimuttu (1915-1983) was a Tamil poet, editor, critic and publisher, who had significant influence in the literary scenes of London and New York City, particularly in the 1940s and 1950s. In 1939, he founded the literary magazine Poetry London, to which many well-known writers contributed, including: Lawrence Durrell, Kathleen Raine, W. H. Auden, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Roy Campbell, Robin Skelton, and many others. Consequently the magazine showcased late modernist and American Beat poetry.This 1944 work is Volume 2, Number 10, ofPoetry London, containing a letter in memory of the war poet Keith Douglas (1920-1944); poetry and prose from well-known writers such as R. S. Thomas, Stevie Smith, Henry Miller, and Lawrence Durrell; a lithograph to T. S. Eliot's Rhapsody on a Windy Night by Gerald Wilde, and drawings for The Ancient Mariner by Mervyn Peake. Collated, complete. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, cloth is generally smart, though faded to the spine and front board, with a little bumping to the extremities.
