Edition originale
rigide.

Edition originale
12mo, pp. [1-4] [1-5] 6 [7] 8-138 [139] [140: blank] [141: printer's imprint] [142: blank], original cream wrappers printed in red and black, all edges untrimmed. First edition. Catastrophe novel set in the future. The sun is cooling and humanity moves underground to survive, creating a new world and a new society. The novel "depicts first a world society on the surface of the earth, then, with the exhaustion of the sun's energy, a sanitary underground utopia. The author seems to evince satirical doubts about the value of the latter as a model for human conduct." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 1201. "Worth reading, especially for the fluent, well-imagined ideal society of the thirty-first century." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2156. Published in English in 1905 as UNDERGROUND MAN with introduction by H. G. Wells. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 2-145; (1981) 1-157; (1987) 1-90; and (1995) 1-90. Negley, Utopian Literature: A Bibliography 1086 (in addition to this 1904 edition, Negley records [at BN only] a 52-page Paris 1896 edition. This is an offprint of the original version printed in REVUE INTERNATIONALE DE SOCIOLOGIE, not an earlier publication in book form). Several creases to front cover, tear in rear cover mended, some soiling and darkening to wrappers, a very good copy. Rare. (#108491).
