Hardcover, has slight lean to binding, previous owner's name inked to first free endapge, slight bumps to spine ends and board corners, faint sunning to spine, and a couple small light spots of staining near upper corner of front board, otherwise a solid, tight VG copy in Good+ dust jacket which has bumps with shallow chips to spine ends and corners, edgewear with some short creased tears that have been internally repaired with small pieces clear tape, light sunning with small torn snag to spine, and rubbing with small spots of soiling to panels.

Condition good, spine and edges of covers are faded and grubby, edges rubbed, Spotting to end-papers else contents very clean throughout, a couple of spots to margins of last couple of pages of text. The plates are very clean, protected with captioned tissue-guards. Two tone illustrations by Alastair. A Limited Edition of 1850. "Eighteen hundred and fifty numbered copies" though for some reason this copy has not been numbered, the line at the end of the limitation statement is blank. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Book.

Thick Royal Folio. 196pp. Coloured illustrated endpapers, with different image front and rear, 11 full page colour plate captioned and tissueguarded wonderful and bizarre illustrations by Alistair, collated all present and in very good order. Internally very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate, inscriptions or ownership marks of any kind. Remarkable free from foxing and browning, well held in joints and hinges, printed with wide margins on thick creamy paper. Bound in original full wide weave dusted linen cloth, rolled to corners with bump to upper leading corner, chipped to spine with short frays, edges of leaves attractively untrimmed. Manon Lescault was immediately banned upon publication in France in 1731. Despite this, it became very popular and pirated editions were widely distributed. In a subsequent 1753 edition, the Abbe Prevost toned down some scandalous details and injected more moralizing disclaimers. The work was to become the most reprinted book in French Literature, with over 250 editions published between 1731 and 1981. Many adaptations have been made; 2 operas, 3 ballets, 2 verse dramas and 8 films. The volume in hand in a good addition to the library of scholar and collector alike.

No. 1,151 of 1850 copies. Bookplate tipped onto blank flyleaf; spine slightly tanned with one small spot; contents clean, tight and sound. The slipcase is dampstained at the bottom, repaired at joints, and with small chips to the covering paper.
Hard cover. Etat : Very good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Limited edition of 1,850 copies printed. Copy #1,451. Jacket is tanned and scuffed, but text is legible. Jacket spine is worn along edges with a large tear from top edge along back cover hinge. Book itself is in very good condition for its age. Spine is bumped and slightly shaken, but binding is secure. Inside is clean and unmarked.
