Double title page - first has engraving illustration of Windsor from the North West. 'Illustrated by above one thousand engravings'. Page edges marbled. Interior very good indeed. Hardcover. Etat : Good. No Jacket. Two volumes (complete). A robust, solid couple of books. Bound in three-quarters leather. The books are elderly and appear to have languished rather in storage. However, they are resolute and sound. The boards are much worn, marked, stained. They are steady. The leathered corners and spines are also much worn. The spines pleasingly fit. The leathered areas respond well to wax polish. Within, the gutters fore and aft are cracked. The security of the books are unaffected. Vol 1: 'Tales and Sketches' - a retiring copy. The contents are foxed throughout, there are age marks, some storage marks. Nonetheless, the pages are clear, tight, certain, alert. Vol II : - with a memoir of James Hogg (the Ettrick Shepherd) by the Rev Thomson - 'Poems and Life'. This volume also has foxing throughout. The early pages storage tide marks.
