Hardcover. Etat : NF. Etat de la jaquette : NF. Photos (illustrateur). 1st. Published to mark 100 years of operations by one of NZ's largest, best known and longest-surviving commercial fishing companies, this book also traces the development of the country's fishing industry from the days of the early coal-fired steam trawlers to the state-of-the-art boats the company imported from Japan in the late 1970s. The story also follows the history of the Sanford family, which had its NZ origins in 1864 when Albert Sanford, from Devon, deserted from crew of the passenger ship Victory at Auckland, where he settled. His fishing ventures were consolidated into a formal trading concern when he purchased trading premises in Auckland in 1881. The history covers the period leading up to WWI, the Great Depression, WWII (when several company vessels were taken over for naval service) and the era of technological change up to the 1980s. The book is also a tribute to the many people, ashore and afloat. who played a part in the development of a major fishing enterprise, which still trades today. First edition of 1981, 133 pages, colour photos section of 15 images, b/w photos throughout, including portraits and many of the company vessels. Blue hard covers with gilt front/spine titles NF, internally NF, no inscriptions, colour pictorial DJ also NF.
