The jacket has a couple of small pulls at the top of the front panel. Introduction by Karl Shapiro. An epic poem which attempts to characterize Harlem from the 1920's on. This work by the African-American author was meant to be the Prologue to a much larger work, but no other volumes were published.

The letter edges are age-toned and chipped, but essentially intact. The jacket has light edgewear with a short tear to the top front edge, and the spine is sun faded. Jacket in protective cover. Tolson graduated with honors from Lincoln University, attended Columbia University, and taught at Langston University in Langston Oklahoma (where he also served three terms as mayor, from 1954 to 1960). In 1947, Liberian President Tubman named Tolson Liberia's Poet Laureate. In 1953 Tolson completed a major epic poem in honor of that nation's centennial, *Libretto for the Republic of Liberia.* He was also the basis for the central character in the movie *The Great Debaters* (2007), directed by and starring Denzel Washington.
