Era la seconda decade del ventesimo secolo e la Francia, come il resto dell'Europa, usciva da un particolare periodo storico, il primo con?itto mondiale. Le nazioni europee erano impegnate nella propria ricostruzione, mentre le popolazioni volevano riappropriarsi della loro indipendenza e della propria libertà. Ebbe cosi inizio un contesto storico che in futuro verrà ricordato in Italia come gli "Anni ruggenti", ossia i "Roaring twenties", termine che verrà coniato in Germania come "Goldene zwanziger", in Spagna i "Felices años veinte" e in Francia "Années folles". Un'epoca di intensa attività sociale, culturale e artistica che fu caratterizzata dal fenomeno musicale "Jazz" e dalla comparsa di una generazione di donne liberali: le Flappers. Negli Stati Uniti d'America entrò in vigore il Proibizionismo e molti Americani per poter appropriarsi di una loro identità oramai persa e cioè gli "American Drinks", dovettero oltrepassare i propri confini. Una delle capitali in cui la cultura del bere miscelato era già arrivata da precedenti anni era appunto Parigi e la sua nazione, la Francia. Fu proprio in questo contesto storico che Adolphe Torelli nel 1921 pubblica il suo primo lavoro: un libro dal titolo "Guide du Barman et du Gourmet Chic" e cioè una raccolta di ben 690 ricette. Negli anni seguenti perfezionerà il testo ed arriverà a ben 900 ricette. I suoi testi saranno un'importante testimonianza per un italianissimo cocktail e cioè per l'Americano. Un mix che troverà la sua prima traccia nel 1921 in un drink sotto il nome di Torelli's Appetizer; un mix composto da bitter Campari e vermouth riempito da seltz e guarnito da una scorza di limone.

Did you know a proper Martini Dry Cocktail contains "deux traits d'Angustura bitter, deux traits d'Absinthe, deux traits de Curacao sec, un demi-verre de Vermouth Martini Rossi sec, autant de Dry Gin," garnished with "un zeste de citron presse, d'une olive verte et de courtes pailles"?
