Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Publisher - John van Voorst, London, 1856. 1st ed. Very good condition, dark blue blind stamped boards with ornate gilt lettering to spine. Only very minimal shelf wear, rough cut pages darkened at edges with age. Colour printed fold out frontispiece, 5 further colour plates and one b/w plate. Plates have shadows on reverse and there is very faint offsetting to the opposite pages. Otherwise the text is bright and clean. The Revd Tugwell unashamedly addressed this work to 'the amateur rambler about our English coasts' and provides an account in plain language for the rambler to follow. The result is a charming example of Victorian natural history - written to encourage the reader to understand nature better. With a listing of locations at the rear.
