Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good- dj. First Edition. [general shelfwear, some fraying to cloth at top of spine and partial exposure of board at top edge of front cover; the jacket has a bit of paper loss at the spine extremities, a small surface-scar on the rear panel, several short closed edge-tears, and a small rectangular piece missing at the lower left corner of the rear panel (no loss of text or illustration)]. (4 B&W film stills) Photoplay edition, but a weird one. First, it's the true first edition of this book (as Photoplay Editions sometimes were), rather than a reprint. But more strangely, it actually contains six different stories, unrelated to one another, three of which had been turned into movies. And the oddness keeps coming: the title/cover story is the shortest one in the book, at a mere 38 pages, and the four stills from the film itself mostly appear in the middle of other, unrelated stories. It's not hard to figure out what was going on here, marketing-wise: at that time, Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor were Hollywood's most romantic on-screen couple, having co-starred in two earlier films (they would ultimately make a dozen together), so of course Fox wanted to give them as much exposure as possible. By rights, however, the book should have been called "The Collected Works of Tristram Tupper," for his authorship provides the common thread. The first two -- "Four Brothers" and "Terwilliger" -- had been previously filmed (under different titles, by studios other than Fox), and the remaining three -- "A Storm at the Crossroads," "The Language of the Angels," and "The Man Who Knew Nothing on Earth" -- had all seen print in various magazines. Interesting to note that Tupper dedicated the book to "Three Friends in Hollywood: Frank Borzage [who directed LUCKY STAR], W.R. Sheehan and Sol M. Wurtzel," all of whom were associated with the Fox Film Corporation -- another reason Gaynor and Farrell got the cover, no doubt.
