Hardcover. Etat : Good. Steinhardt, Jakob, designed and illustrated by; Baruch, Franziska, designed of the Hebrew type-face (illustrateur). 70 pages. 265 x 197 mm. Yudlov 2888 Yaari 1952. Yerushalmi 134-136. Spine and edge of boards repaired masterfully. Yudlov writes that this is a smaller version of the 1921 edition (Yudlov 2813. Winer 266 alef). Yudlov did not see the 1921 edition, which printed in 218 copies on hand made paper and bases his entry on Winer and on a facsimile he saw that was printed in Tel Aviv in 1979. He notes the Winer erred regarding the number of pages. 35 leaves. Wine stained in places. Yerushalmi: This is one of the most truly distinguished Haggadahs published in modern times, a milestone in Hebrew book production. The artist responsible for the illustrations was Jacob Steinhardt (1887-1968). Born in Poland, he studied art in Berlin and Paris. In 1912 he returned to Berlin, where he began to exhibit. His career was interrupted by World War I, during which he served in the German army. Returning to Germany, he remained there until the advent of Hitler in 1933, and then left to settle in Jerusalem. In 1949 he became head of the graphics department at the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts and, from 1953 to 1957, he was its director. Most of Steinhardt's work was done in engraving and lithography, and, above all, in woodcut. The woodcut of the four sons displays the strong impact of German expressionism in that phase of his work. As in the Prague Hagada of 1526 the wicked son appears as a soldier, but dressed in a Prussian uniform with a spiked helmet on his head. The beautiful Hebrew characters in the text of the Haggadah were drawn by the noted type designer Franziska Baruch and executed by Steinhardt in wood.
