Later, probably fifth, edition, but the first published with the ?Declamatiuncula pro Barbis? and ?Poemata? This popular work of imagery was first published in Basel in 1556 and reprinted several times during the 17th century. Giovanni Pierio Valeriano from Belluna (1477-1558) was a prominent Italian Renaissance humanist, friend of several cardinals and popes, who after the discovery of Horapollo specialized in the study of Egyptian hieroglyphs. Based on Horapollo and from his own almost unlimited access to hieroglyphics and antiquities in both public and private collections, Valeriano produced this dictionary of symbols and hieroglyphs and a guide to much of the Renaissance iconography, which served as a precursor to books such as Cesare Ripa?s Iconologia. The book is divided into sixty chapters, each focused on a specific symbol, the first 25 to different kinds of animals, and each is dedicated to different friends and patrons of his work. ?In Valeriano?s book hieroglyphs are wedded to the symbolism of mediaeval lapidaries and bestiaries, and of the Physiologus ascribed to Epiphanius, a collection of symbols suggested by animals (the stork, the pelican, the phoenix, etc), which was itself of Alexandrine provenance? (Praz p. 24.). Hardcover / Hardback.
Edité par Gio Battista Combi, Venetia, 1625
Leather. Etat : Good Only. None (illustrateur). An uncommon Italian language edition of this famed early study on Egyptian hieroglyphs. This study looks at hieroglyphics and their use in allegory. With the signatures: A-G4, H2, A-Z8, Aa-Zz8, Aaa-Ccc8, Ddd6. An early edition of this work, and an unusual imprint. Most early editions of this work on the market are in Latin, whereas this work is in Italian. This is not the first Italian translation, which appeared in 1602, however surviving Italian language translations from this period appear to be of a higher scarcity. Valeriano took inspiration from the culturally important and contemporaneous rediscovery of Horapollo's Hieroglyphics. His tutor, Giorgio Valla produced writings on Horapollo and some consider this work to be a sort of continuation. This work formed the most concise Renaissance dictionary of symbols, which was an area of study that was gathering much interest during that period. Each entry to this work is dedicated to noted Renaissance figures who assisted or inspired Valeriano in his writings. Valeriano mostly discusses natural history through the emblem images with information he procured from Medieval bestiaries and the 'Physiologus'. This work became a useful source for many emblem publications in addition to art and general literature works. Adorned with hundreds of beautiful woodcuts throughout, which each have a textual entry explaining the 'hieroglyph'. Collation unavailable for this uncommon edition, appears complete according to signatures, pagination and catch-words. The title page states that this work has been formed of Valeriano's famed work in addition to hieroglyphic writings by one 'Celio Augostino'. Celio Agostino Curione or Curione Celio Augustino was a sixteenth century historian. He lived from 1538-1567 and was the son of a famed Italian reformer. Agostino's edition of 'Hieroglypica' was first published in 1567 with these two supplementary books. The 1567 edition was the true second edition and therefore only the first edition does not contain Agostino's additions. The supplementary books have many illustrations. The first deals with the Gods and men of ancient Egypt, with the second regarding animals, geometric figures, stones and plants. His aim was to replicate Valeriano's style when producing these two additional books. This work was first published in 1556. Valeriano was a native of Belluno and was the educator of the younger generation of the Medici family, following his assignment by Pope Leo X. This copy has fascinating provenance, as it holds the bookplate of William Stirling of Keir House. It is possible that this is either the bookplate of Sir William Stirling Maxwell or the architect William Stirling II. Sir William Stirling Maxwell was a Scottish historical writer and art historian. The family motto is to the bookplate, which shares a name with the British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire 'Gang Forward'. Gang Forward was bred by one William Stirling Crawfurd who named the horse after the motto of Clan Stirling. He was successful in ten races and was one of the best colts of his generation. A fascinating emblematic work from the Renaissance era, in need of a sympathetic rebinding. In a full calf binding. Externally, worn. Boards are detached but present. Loss to the spine due to rubbing. Internally, firmly bound. All but the first eight leaves are very bright. Page 571 seems to be closely cropped, with the edge of the image lacking. It is not evident anywhere else in the text that this work has been closely cropped. Chips to the edges of first five leaves. Title page is slightly soiled with scattered spotting. Closed tear to A2, not affecting the text. Spotting to the first few pages, otherwise the pages are generally clean with just the odd spots. Good Only. book.

Etat : Very Good. Later Edition. A very good 1625 Italian edition of this work on Medieval and Renaissance iconography and Hieroglyphics with hundres of engravings (288 icon images + title plates, end plates, capital letters, and more). Valeriano was a Renaissance scholar and humanist and this is one of his most influential works which was inspired by the then contemporaneous rediscovery of a work related to Hieroglyphics by Horapollo. The majority of this book was first published in Latin in 1556. A second edition of the book included two additional sections authored by, Celio Augustino Curione, who mimicked Valeriano's style to ensure continuity of the text. The two works together are represented here. The first Italian edition was published in 1604. This book is in good condition and has been relatively recently rebound in a handmade flexible cardboard with new end papers. The title page contains some repairs to tears in the edges. The name, Pippi, was written on the bottom fore edge (may be a different name). Ink marks and staining throughout, but with little impact to the text. Last leaf has small hole impacting part of a few words, as well as some discoloration likely cause by previous binding (no longer present). Some very light and old water stains to the bottom 2%-5% of the pages with limited impacts to text as majority of the book only the margins are impacted. Otherwise, the pages are clean and text and engravings are clear. Page 571 has full page design with slight cropping to the right-side engravings. The 288 engravings (by my count) depict a variety of images including elephants, rhinoceroses, Pegasus, ships, man, and many more. Majoirty of these engravings are in square frames, but some include long obelisks and other shapses. Pages:(82) 806 Dimensions:12â x 9½ x 2.

4º mayor. Egipto. Filosofía. Poesía latina. Hieroglyphs. Egypt. Philosophy. Latin poetry.
