Hardcover. Etat : vg. First edition. Octavo. [10], 370pp. Original decorative wrappers over blue cloth with gold lettering on spine and blind-stamped printer's device on front board. Free front endpaper inscribed and signed by Michel Alexander Vallon. Printer's device on title page. This is the most complete and systematic treatment ever published of the life and religious philosophy of Nicolas Berdyaev, the great Russian thinker of the 20th century. The first part of the book narrates Berdyaev's intellectual growth and struggle through his native aristocratic environment, and his consecutive allegiance to Marxism, Idealism, and Christianity until his expulsion from Russia by the Communists and his death in Paris. The second part presents Berdyaev's views on God, Man, Jesus Christ, Christian Ethics, and the Philosophy of History. It ends with a critical evaluation of Berdyaev's work as a whole. The study is conducted within the framework of both Russian and Western thought. Minor damp-staining on back cover of wrappers. Lower edges of binding damp-stained (not affecting pages). Wrappers and binding in overall good, interior in near fine condition.
