Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. This is the 1855 edition, NOT a modern reprint. Bound in half leather with marbled paper boards. The leather was scuffed and dried. We have dyed the leather with leather dye and have treated it with a professional book conservator's leather dressing to good effect. Additonally leather covered with a gloss to add life to its appearance on the shelf. Minor wear to the binding overall. No distortion of the book from reading or improper shelving. Pages are tight and clean with no marks/no underlining. Previous owner's 19th-century bookplate inside the front cover. No odor. No water damage. Some foxing on the last 100 pages or so. Virgil text in Latin; Notes in English. Photos available upon request.

Juxta Editionem Londiniensem.Qua plumima Londiniensis errata, diligentissime animadversa corriguntur" Leather binding has moderate wear, but no abuse. Leather is not dried out, outer hinges are firm though half the back hinge was repaired by being sewn, probably in the 19th century.Missing 3/4 by 1/2 inch chip from foot of spine. Inner hinges firm. Front endpaper has penned notes by Edward Pannell Jun April 21 1807. Light scattered foxing throughout pages. No underlining. Missing rear endpaper. Penned notes on inside of rear cover. Page 267 has 4 inch tear repaired with archival tape. Despite flaws, in better than typical condition for a book of this period. arv.

Prev owner stamp on first few pages, prev univ stamp Genesee College Class of '68. Pages in surprisingly good condition, several sections throughout show pencil markings and glosses in margins, primarily in English. Overall tight copy.

Half Vellum and Boards. Etat : Good. Reprint. 270pp, thirty-seven hand coloured plates, [12]. Slightly later half-vellum and marbled paper over boards, smooth back, leather title label to spine, t.e.g. Vellum rubbed, especially to spine and front cover, small split to upper joint at head with a tiny split to lower joint at head but holding well, rubbed to extremities, board edges lightly bumped, light scratching to marbled paper covering boards with small amount of loss. Internally lightly browned, one or two spots of foxing, but generally quite clean and bright. Gift inscription to ffep to an Arthur Pomeroy from a Dr Steele. The attractive hand-coloured plates to rear, binding is by F. Cavenagh of Dublin (See Ramsden, page 230, though spelled differently and at a slightly different address, almost certainly the same binder). Moss II:724 (quoting a review from the Monthly Review). Both Pritzel and Nissen have other works by Martyn, but not this one Size: 4to.

Else!), Buchrücken am Kapital an der hinteren Falz mit ca. 4cm Anriss und dort mit 4cm x 2cm großer Fehlstelle des Lederbezuges sowie zwei Querrissen zur vorderen Falz hin, Rückdeckel mit Beschriftungsfragmenten (Else, 444 und E.v.HV), Titelseite in rotem und schwarzem Druck lose sowie mit kleinem roten Buntstiftvermerk, einige Seiten der Bucolica und der Aeneis (am Beginn) mit grünen Unterstreichungen, auf der doppelseitigen Karte am Ende der Georgica unten ein ca. 7cm Anriss, sonst altersgemaß schönes Exemplar Werkausgabe in lateinischer Sprache. In England sind Vergils Werke schon erstmals 1532 und dann 1650, 1677, 1687, 1688 und 1695 gedruckt worden. Demgemäß wäre diese Ausgabe dann die siebtälteste in England getätigte Drucklegung der drei Werke des römischen Dichters. Sprache: Latein.
