Octavo, maroon cloth stamped in gold. First U. S. edition. A rather stark melodrama, with radical overtones, set in mid-Victorian England and Russia. The author was born in Ireland. Her best-known novel, THE GADFLY (1897), "a bitterly anti-clerical novel of revolution," became something of a classic in Russia. Her Polish-born husband, an antiquarian bookseller in London with ties to the underground in Russia, was something of a brute, apparently; some of the author's works reflect an "obsessive concern with sadism and physical pain." - Blain, Grundy and Clements, The Feminist Companion to Literature in English, pp. 1117-8. Slight spine lean, a tight, bright very good to nearly fine copy. (#128910).
