Ex library copy with associated labels, inserts, stamps and annotations. Pages with some foxing and tanning, particularly to endpapers and textblock edges. Some cracking to gutters with exposed netting. Binding loose. Boards have heavy shelf wear with bumping and fraying to corners and crushing and heavy fraying to spine ends. All surfaces tanned and sunned, particularly spine. Gilt lettering to spine is dulled but remains brighter on front. Book has strong forward lean.

Red coloured tint to the top textblock edge. Black-and-white illustrated dustwrapper, being a part reproduction of W. P. Frith's painting "Derby Day", with ochre coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. The artist W. P. Frith (William Powell) was one of the most popular of Victorian artists. In his lifetime he wrote three rambling volumes of reminiscences. There was on friendly terms with most of the luminaries of English society and his reminiscences " . throws new light on Victorian life and society." -- from the front fold over panel blurb. This book is an abridgement of the three volumes. Softening to the backstrip edges and rubbing to the book corners and lower book edges. Browning and faint foxing to the textblock edges and pages. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. Rubbing to edges of the backstrip and creases. The results of insect activity can be seen to the top right-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel and sunning is visible to all panels of the dustwrapper. Excised from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", one of 48 separate serialized subscription offerings issued under the title "The Works of Shakspere (sic) Edited by Charles Knight". Artist ("PinxT (Pinxit), meaning "the work of") was W.P. Frith, the engraver was J. Brain. Scene for the engraving is "The Duel", from Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night".
