Byrd's Antarctic expedition, and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. Walden is considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes. This book is written as though the dog herself is speaking and the author, Walden, swears it is the true history of the dog, Shirley.

Arthur Walden Sept. 1/30". In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrd s Antarctic expedition, and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden, considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes, was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman (Dr Francis Dana Coman (1895-1952) ) was with Byrd s first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd. He later had a mountain named after him by Finn Ronne of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48. Later Printing of this northland classic, no date title page, dated 1928 copyright page. Introduction by Walter Collins O'Kane. Illustrated with map end pages, 12 black and white photos, 9 attributed to noted Pacific Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis, brother of the renowned photographer Edward Curtis, 3 photos unattributed. Book is Very Good, two quarter-sized stains rear boards that bleed onto rear end pages but do not affect text, some underlining and marginal notations in ink by Dr. Coman. In the SCARCE dust jacket, Good only, 1/2" of jacket trimmed top and bottom and lacking the flaps. A great ASSOCIATION COPY. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR.
