Hardcover. Etat : Fine. xvi, 96, [2] + 16 double-page color facsimile plates; large folio (24.5 x 16 in.), dark brown half morocco, tan cloth sides, t.e.g.; printed on thick paper. The plates are preceded by scholarly essays by Wallis, Janet Backhouse, and others providing history and background on Rotz and this atlas. Also included are a transcription and translation of the text. Jean Rotz (c. 1505-c. 1560), navigator of Dieppe and royal hydrographer, wrote and addressed this work to Henry VIII. In the text portion, Rotz provides what is essentially a manual of navigational instruction, including topics such as how to use the winds of the sea-compass and how to calculate latitude by observations of the sun. The atlas portion contains regional charts of the lands and sea coasts of the world, including America and the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and Far East, the coasts of Asia and Africa, the Black Sea and Mediterranean, South America to the Strait of Magellan, and a world map in two hemispheres. A fine and fresh copy of an impressive production. Barker 244.
