Hardback. First. 8vo, stiff pictorial spiral-bound covers. 326 pp, 124 illlustrations (frontispiece in color), biographical notes on the artists, extensive bibliography, index. According to Basil Gray, writing in the preface to this catalogue, the perfection of multiple-block colour-printed woodcuts in Japan took place during the closing months of 1764. Most of the prints in the exhibition can be dated from between 1765 to 1770, the year which marked the death of Harunobu. The illustrations, although predominantly in black-and-white, are finely printed on coated white paper. Each is accompanied by an informative text. Very good; cloth-covered boards over spiral binding.

Boards Over Spiral Binding. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. Various (illustrateur). First Edition. A volume celebrating the 200th anniversary of the perfection of multiple-block color printing in Japan. One of the oddest bindings I've seen: hard covers around a spiral wire binding! Plates reproduced in black-and-white, unfortunately. Still, a nice book with some interesting comments on early Japanese color artists. Cover smoke-stained from a fire in 1968, spine browned. Interior in excellent condition -- previous owner's name and date/place of purchase on front pastedown.

Hardback. Etat : Good. Trustees of the British Museum, 1964, first edition; 8vo, spiral bound in pictorial cloth covers, pp 328; white cloth covers foxed and with the spine darkened but internally in good to very good condition; approaching half the pages comprise monochrome illustrations of the prints selected from the BM's extensive collection and described and these, together with the index, extensive bibliography and an appendix on illustrated books make this work very useful. It's broadly agreed that Japanese wood block printing was perfected by 1764 and the book focuses on the six year period from the beginning of 1765 to the death of Haronobu in 1770, arguably the golden age of the art.
