Hardcover. Etat : G+. Etat de la jaquette : None. Photos, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. This history of the USSCo of NZ was published by the company to mark its 75th anniversary in 1951 and one of NZ's best known marine authors of the time, S D Waters, was commissioned to compile the volume. The result was a fine book covering what was then an internationally significant shipping company with six passenger and 51 cargo ships plus six more ships building. Alas, the line is no more, having ceased maritime operations in the late l990s. This then is the compelling story of a line at the height of its importance that had humble beginnings in NZ and later sailed to many parts of the world. An ex-library copy. 148 pages including fleet list, company coat of arms colour frontis, b/w photos throughout, e/paper maps of company trade routes. Seized as a prize of war from Finland while in Wellington Harbour in July 1941 this four masted bark, one of the last large sailing ships still trading, spent the rest of WWII serving under the NZ ensign, mainly sailing trans-Pacific to the west coast of North America. In November 1948 the ship was restored to her Finnish owners soon after having returned from her final voyage under NZ colours which took her to London wilth a wool cargo and back with cement. Sydney Waters, a well known NZ nautical historian said in his introduction that whatever happened to the ship under Finnish control "it is certain that the Pamir. will long be remembered by NZ ship lovers." An appendix to the book contains the crew list for the 10 voyages she made under the NZ flag and also of the 18 Kiwi seafarers who sailed on the ship when she left Wellington for South Australia to load barley for London -- by then flying the flag of Finland. Hard Covers. Etat : VG. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Map (illustrateur). 1st. Shortly before the outbreak of WWII Sydney Waters compiled a history of the New Zealand Shipping Company "Clipper Ship to Moror Liner." His second book for the company, and the associate Federal Steam Navigation Co, carries that story on through the difficult, dangerous and costly time of the 1939-45 war. Of the fine ships of the two companies, 19 were lost to enemy action, totalling almost 200,000 gross register tons. This was more than half the total tonnage at the outbreak of war, Four other ships (26,253 grt) operated for the Ministry of War Transport were also lost. First company ship sunk was the Turakina, victim of the German raider Orion in the Tasman Sea in August 1940, after a gallant but one-sided fight. The price in lives lost throughout the war was was 279 masters, officers and crew, including stewardesses. This account of the company's WWII operations meets the author's high standard of maritime writing in every way. 263 pages including five appendices and index, five b/w plates (four photos, one painting), one map. Red hard covers with gilt spine titles on black panel VG, light fading to both boards, corners lightly bumped, former owner stamp top left front pastedown, also lower margin p26, light foxing to FEPs, text block otherwise VG+.
