Octavo, 465 pp., title page printed in red and black, original bevel-edged terra cotta cloth stamped in gold, t.e.g., other edges untrimmed. First edition. One of Watson's collections of his tremendously popular Drumtochty stories, sketches nostalgically reflective of an idealized rural Scottish life. "In his day Watson had a large following both in Britain and abroad. Both Queen Victoria and W. E. Gladstone were admirers of his publications. Yet the great sentimentality of his fiction definitely places him in the Kailyard school. His chief merit was his ability to record rural dialects with reasonable competence, but he lacked skill in connecting sketches to form a unified work." - Kemp, Mitchell and Trotter, Edwardian Fiction, p. 258. Owner's signature dated 1899 on front free endpaper. Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends and corner tips, a very good copy. (#134394).
