Alas, this book's frontispiece was glued to first page of text, and this first choir, and the page it was glued to, has detached from the rest of the text block. The rest of the text is tight. Spine was repaired with cloth library tape.

Complete in volume. 32mo, 5 1/4" tall, vol. 1: 184 pages; vol. 2: 244 pages + 1 engraved frontispiece and 2 engraved additional title pages, gilt spine titles 3/4 leather over marbled boards. This small volume has a very good interior, internal binding solid, paper clean and moderately yellowed with a bit of foxing toward the endpapers still supple, exterior shelf worn and leather rubbed at the extremities, the top of the spine badly chipped, fore-corner tips worn through to boards, previous owner's bookplate and name on front endpaper.

Hardcover. Full leather with scuffed gilt titles in red square on spine. The covers are slit vertically next to the spine but the binding is still secure. Some ege and corner wear with minor loss at spine ends. Interior has expected toning of hand-laid paper. Interesting essays by the great English hymn writer along with a biography. Watts was a major influence on early American music. ; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 229 pages.

Light shelf/edge wear, light rubbing, corners gently bumped, moisture stain involving endpages (not textblock), thumb-sized chip at fore-edge of ffep and title page (does involve three lines of text near bottom), a few closed tears at fore edge, even toning to leaves, sporadic foxing throughout, owner mark at rfep, else tight and clean. Full brown leather boards, gilt decorative elements. 12mo. 214pp. Index.

Stated first American edition. A volume of reflections by Isaac Watts, a British theologian best known for the writing of popular hymns such as "Joy to the World" and Come Ye that Love the Lord." It is said that Emily Dickinson adopted her meter style from Watts' hymns, which were sung in her Amherst church. Affixed to the rear paste-down is a hand-made decorative bookplate reading "Alanson Rittenhouse this book Presented to him by his Friend the Rev.nt James McLaughlin. December 6, 1809" A note on the endpaper opposite reads "Bought at the Vendue After the death of Alanson and Mary Rittenhouse December 5th, 1844 by John T. Risler, price 20 cents." Inside the back flyleaf reads: Found in Shanty Shop, Trenton, N. J. Oct 19, 1948. Price 20 c.! J. R. Vitelli." REFERENCES: Evans 31580; Felcone, J.J. Printing in New Jersey, 1754-1800, 853. This is a rather stark library-type binding but the only apparent library sign is a pencil number in corner of title page. 365pp, octavo. Includes Watts' original dedication of 1724. Front cover has circular mark (possibly where label removed) binding tight. Text block presentable, some foxing and browning, mostly light but about 20 leaves have heavy diffuse foxing stains to lower parts of pages, though text is clearly legible. A Very Good copy. OCLC does not locate any copies but one was located at AAS #358124. Divided into two sections, the small songbook lists the words for 28 Divine Songs, followed by a list of the "10 Commandments" and the "Sum of the Ten," as well as words for 3 Hosannas, and "Glory to the Father." The section titled, "Moral Songs," lists the words for 8 songs. This is an early copy of a hymn book that was later revised and reprinted.

A small booksellers label is stuck inside the top inside front cover noting Robbins & Wheeler Booksellers Winchester . Book is in good condition apart from the items listed above.
