Hardcover. Etat de la jaquette : Dust jacket. First Edition. "The first attempt at collating all the authentic portraits of the Duke". 49 plates showing various portraits, sculptures, medallions and the death mask. With excerpts from correspondence between the first Duke and the artist Robert Haydon whose portrait is included. Presentation from the co-author Gerald Wellesley, a descendant of the Duke who became Duke of Wellington himself in 1943, "For Robert Buhler in memory of my sittings, Apsley House, July 1964." Dust jacket rather chipped worn and torn. Book very good indeed in fine brown buckram with gilt lettering and armorial design on the front board. Scarce. Loosely inserted is a typed letter on his Stratfield Saye House headed paper, signed by the Duke dated 3rd July, to Buhler, pleased that he is to paint his portrait for the University of Southampton. He was Chancellor from 1952-62. He proposes sitting times and the use of a life mask made thirty years before, "the fleshy parts will have altered since then but the boney structure is the same". The artist has jotted some notes as to brushes etc. Also a hand written letter from the Duke on the 8th July moving on to arrangements at his other home, Apsley House, and how to find him inside its large expanse. It all seems to have happened with great despatch as the book is given "in memory of my sittings," in July, and by the 8th August, also enclosed, is a third letter thanking Buhler for photographs of the portrait and regretting the end of their association. Minor browning to two letters and more so to the hand written one. Signed by Author.
