Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. xi+211pp. Illus. in text. Dr. Wertham had many years experience with disturbed and delinquent youngsters. His book exposes the sobering facts behind one of America's most shocking murders - the story of Frank Santana, the so-called 'hoodlum' who killed so-called 'model-boy' Billy Blankenship. Santana, a fatherless boy from Puerto Rico, joined a stick-ball group which evolved into a gang for self-protection. Prejudice in the neighbourhood was strong. What was not generally known, however, was that the victim was also a member of a gang who made a practice of beating up Puerto Ricans. The author, a noted psychiatrist who was asked to examine Santana by the defence, describes the events, the background and much data not heard in the court. Includes Index. Book.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Wertham is probably best remembered today as the psychiatrist and cultural critic whose writing ("Seduction of the Innocent: The Influence of Comic Books on Today's Youth") and testimony before Congress were largely responsible creation of the Comics Code Authority. Wertham claimed on sometimes inadequate evidence that violence in comics and other mass media were a major factor in crime and violence in American society. However, Wertham's focus was not limited to comics. In his early work, such as "The Show of Violence," which contains case histories of murderers Wertham dealt with in New York City as a forensic psychiatrist at Belleview and Queens County Hospitals, he more generally criticizes lawyers and psychiatrists, the media, and the criminal justice and mental health systems for failures that contribute to crime and violence in America. First Edition, early printing. 279 pages, including an index, in light blue cloth boards. Corners and spine ends lightly bumped; color faded at edges and on spine, o/w boards and text are clean and unmarked, tight and square. Sorry, no dustjacket. A very decent reading/study copy.

Boards. Etat : Very Good. The 1954 1st edition --with the "Rinehart" logo to the copyright page-- of this infamous attack on the comic book industry over the alleged harmful effects of much of its content on America's youth. Solid and VG- in its gray boards, with light scuffing along the spine and soiling at the front gutter. Still though, a solid, presentable copy. Octavo, this copy missing its explosive bibliography at the rear (which for legal reasons was cleanly excised from almost every copy). Lacking its uncommon dustjacket as well.
