hardcover. Etat : Good. Whymper (illustrateur). First Edition. Blue cloth bound with gilt title and decoration to spine and cover. slight fading to front cover. Frontispiece missing seven colour illustations intact, Previous owner inscribed on front board, very minimal foxing on front and last two pages, one loose tissue paper over illustration, xiv, 256pp. The author has collated a 'mass of information, anecdote and opinion' from over 100 anglers of 'recognised qualification for answering such an inquiry'. He has presented this in a fully indexed book so that 'anyone can ascertain at a glance the most or least favourable weather conditions for any given fish in a number of well-known waters'. His chapter headings include: of Rain and incidentally of Hail mad Sleet, of Wind, of Thunder and Lightening, Best and worst weather for certain waters. Seven of the original eight colour illustrations remain, the frontispiece is missing. They are reproductions of works by Charles Whymper.

Dark royal-blue hardback binding, impressed decoration and gilt titles/ornamentation to front and spine, light white streaky marks to lightly decorated rear. Wear with small rubs and light small frays to spine-ends, rubbing to boards' corners which are rounded, browning to end-papers and last page. Foxing to page-edges, blotching to title-page, first pages/prelims and last couple of pages. Signs of splitting to ends of inner hinges, fairly minor and strong. Pages have occasional small blotches. Excellent B&Willustrations and strong binding.

Internally, binding is loosening in places. The odd bit of age-toning, offsetting, and light spotting to the first and last few pages, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean throughout. In a later binding: plain green cloth boards with gilt lettering on green spine label. Thick 4to. A large and heavy volume which will incur an additional charge for overseas delivery. Cloth a little rubbed and rounded at corners and spine ends. Text block edges toned. First and last few leaves heavily spotted, with fainter and occasional spotting throughout, mild toning around page margins. Title page smudged and marked. A handsome, imposing volume. Frontispiece shows naval flags of the world, with chapters on Men-of-War, Men of Peace, The Men on the Sea, Perils of a Sailor's Life etc. Whymper was topographical explorer (as well as a newspaper man and artist), best known for his documentation of the west coast of North America.
