Light cock, light tone, otherwise light wear; Dust Jacket 1" spine tail tear, edgewear with small tears and chips, light rub, tone. Solid hardcover. ; Insightful review of "the farm problem" by leading farm journalist McMillen. Great Depression era review of how to run a farm as a business, since the declining population of farmers earned far less than non-farmers. McMillen's obituary notes: "He was a pioneer in finding industrial uses for agricultural crops and previously wasted byproducts. It was a cause that led to a new science [Chemurgy] when he and Henry Ford formed a lobby to champion it in 1935. Mr. McMillen's 15 books include the prophetic Too Many Farmers (William Morrow & Co.), which, in 1929, foretold the decline in the farming population without a loss in food production." The foreword by William M Jardine, former Secretary of Agriculture, relates that "McMillen came to him and "pointed out the inelasticity of the human stomach," and ''proposed a campaign for the support of research to discover and extend nonfood uses for farm-grown materials, and to find more profitable uses for farm wastes." McMillen's book was a view of agriculture as a business, with mechanization and scientific research leading to a reduced farm population more profitably growing both food and industrial products, presaging both the dominance of agribusiness and the use of farm products for biorenewable industrial products. First Edition, Second Printing, in Dust Jacket, of this insightful future view of American farming. ; xi, 340 pages.
