FIRST EDITION, frontispiece portrait of Elles by William Orpen, 24 plates (of which one folding), 2 folding maps, diagram to the text, title printed in red, pp. xvi, 288, 8vo, original binding of full parchment-paper, lettered in gilt to backstrip and upper board, the latter within single-fillet border, t.e.g., tail edge roughtrimmed, light spotting to pastedown, very good. Early work by Williams-Ellis, following his service as an Intelligence Officer in the Tank Corps during the War; written in collaboration with his wife, Amabel (née Strachey, a cousin of Lytton et al.) As the authors discern, the newness of tank warfare required that, for officers, it was 'upon the spirit of prophecy alone that they must rely in their preparations' (p.19) - a far from ideal scenario. This was not the general binding, but others in the series can be found thus - it was presumably some sort of deluxe binding.
