Phil. Trans., 43 (No.475). - 1744/1745. - (London), Printed for C. Davis, . Printer to the Royal Society, For the Months of Januar, Febr. and March, 1745, Kl.4°, (2), pp.239-340, 2 Taf., feiner Halbledereinband. First Printing! Johann Heinrich Winckler (Winkler) (1703-1770), "a philosopher of Wingendorf, Saxony, and Professor of Languages in the University of Leipzig, first uses a fixed cushion in the electric machine for applying friction instead of by means of the hand, and is, by many, believed to have been the first to suggest the use of conductors as a means of protection against lightning (see B.C. 600). In March 1745, Winckler read a paper before the Royal Society, in which he describes machines for rubbing tubes and globes, also a contrivance with which he can give his globes, as many as 680 turns in a minute. Priestley states that the German electricians generally used several globes at a time and that they could excite such a prodigious power of electricity from " globes, whirled by a large wheel and rubbed with woollen cloth or a dry hand, that, if we may credit their own accounts, the blood could be drawn from the finger by an electric spark; the skin would burst and a wound appear, as if made by a caustic." During the year 1746 Winckler made use of common electricity for telegraphic communications by the discharge of Leyden jars through very long circuits, in some of which the River Pleisse formed a part, and it may be added that Joseph Franz had previously discharged the contents of a jar through 1500 feet of iron wire while in the city of Vienna." P.F. Mottelay, Bib. Hist. Electricity & Magnetism (1922), pp.163-164.

[16], 119, [1 blank]; [14], 110, [2 blank]; [56], 139, [1] pp.Early work on electricity. Johann Winkler (1703-1770) improved the construction of the electric generator by using a leather cushion pad held against the globe by adjustable springs, rather than the palm of the hand, and made a further improvement by having the globe rotated by a cord connected to a foot treadle through an elastic rod, thereby releasing both hands. With these improvements he was able to rotate the globe of his machine as fast as 680 turns per minute and produced much brighter and stronger discharges. He also expanded earlier displays and attempted to determine the speed of the movement of electricity, concluding that no interval of time could be observed. The first part of his book describes the properties and causes of electric phenomena; the second investigates the quality of electric matter and electric fire. The essay by the German mining engineer J.S. von Waitz (1698-1777), who wrote two other essays in Dutch and one in French on the subject, won in 1744 the price at the Berlin Academy for the best dissertation on the subject of electricity. With library stamp on half-title, ownership's inscriptions on the title-page and dedication, one plate slightly waterstained, and a few wormholes. Wheeler 2* "Chap. i., treats of the mutual effect of two electrified bodies; chap. ii, of what occurs when a neutral body is brought near one that is electrified; electrical nature of thunderstorm; reference to von Kleist's discovery of the Leyden jar, p.43." Wheeler Plate No. VIII gives "The earliest illustration of the Leyden jar". B. Dibner, Early Elect. Machines, p.27 3* "The Leyden jar with experiments and theory; the identity of lightning and machine electricity discussed, p. 137." Wheeler Two great innovations marked the development of the study of electricity in the early part of the fifth decade of the 18th century. While both of them were contributions to practice rather than to theory, they stimulated theory by providing a complex variety of new phenomena to challenge concepts that were inadequate. The improved "electrical machines", or electrostatic generators, and the condenser, or "Leyden Jar", made it possible to produce electrical effects on a far larger scale than had ever before been possible, thus affording the means for making wholly new types of experiments and also spectacular public demonstrations which drew considerable attention to the subject of electricity. These innovations came chiefly from Germany and Holland. Johann Heinrich Winkler (1703-1770), professor at the University of Leipzig was the first to report on Kleist's experiments in the second volume. He disclosed Kleist's " device as a means for storing and delivering a very powerful electric Shock. Winkler improved the Kleist Jar by winding a chain around the bottle, leading it to a metal plate and thence to the prime conductor of his multiple-globe generator. The shock resulting from this equipment caused him convulsions, blood-agitation, and fever. Winkler was the first to use a fixed cushion in the electric machine for applying friction instead of the hand, and by many is believed to have been the first to suggest the use of conductors as a means of protection against lightning. "During the year 1746 Winckler made use of common electricity for telegraphic communications by the discharge of Leyden jars through very long circuits, in some of which the River Pleisse formed a part, and it may be added that Joseph Franz had previously discharged the contents of a jar through 1500 feet of iron wire .
