Frontispiece portrait with additional Wistar's autobiography is "largely devoted to the opening and development of the far West from 1849 to 1860, in which Wistar played a conspicuous part before achieving fame and fortune in Pennsylvania.". His early manhood was spent adventurously in the West as a muleteer, trapper, and gold miner. In the Civil War he was a brigadier general in the Union army and was wounded four times. After the war he made his fortune by financing railroad building. He established the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia with gifts of $1 million. dj w/lite sunning, in mylar; Size: 4 vo.

This is the Graff copy, with his bookplate (sold at the Newberry duplicate sale in 1966). Each volume contains a bookplate stating: "This book is no. 166 of an edition of 250 copies and is presented to Richard Wistar Davis by The Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology Philadelphia, Pa." An additional printed tipped-in slip in states: "The recipient of this book is requested to regard its contents, for the present, as confidential."
