See photos.** PS2023.0914** 319 pages. 4.25 x 7 inches** This is a first edition of one of the classic books concerning the hostile settlement of the Ohio country. The Chronicles of Border Warfare by Alexander S. Withers (1792-1865) is considered by Western antiquarians to form the best account of frontier life and Indian warfare that has been printed.** An excellent example of the genre of frontier history, the book focuses on the American settlement throughout the northwestern portion of colonial Virginia (an area which today encompasses parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania) from the French and Indian War to the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and the ensuing clashes with the indigenous population. While the watershed events of the advancing frontier (the arrival of scouts, establishment of forts, and the ultimate triumph of the U.S. Army) give a structure to Withers' account, what the book is really about are detailed, often grisly, descriptions of contacts between the races. While the Chronicles purport to be essentially historical in nature, genealogists will appreciate the numerous references to the intrepid scouts and settlers along the frontier furnished by the author.** Because this book was issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed for local consumption, most copies were read until scarcely legible.** "Postage for oversized and international shipping will be calculated by size and weight. AbeBooks shipping quotes are ESTIMATES only. Seller Inventory #009796"**.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. Alexander Scott Withers (1792 - 1865) was a lawyer, Virginia slave owner, magistrate, and teacher. This book describes events spanning from the French and Indian War (1754) through the Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794). Withers prided himself on researching this book, which included reading historical source material and personally interviewing several pioneers. It includes many graphic accounts of massacres. Withers fathered several children with one of his mulatto slaves - and later sold both the slave and his own children, which spurred an article in Harper's Weekly on the question of white slaves. During his teaching career, Withers taught future General "Stonewall Jackson" for at least one year (Wikipedia). Bound in full dark brown leather with gilt title label to spine. Rubbing and wear to leather along hinges and edges of boards. Dampstaining to boards and interior, heaviest on first and last few pages. Red numeric stamp to bottom of title page. Ownership signature dated 1835 to rear endpapers. Pencil calculations to rear endpaper. Foxing, staining, and occasional soiling throughout, but a good reading copy. Interior front hinge is a little loose, but boards remain firmly attached. Chipping to edges of some pages. Front free endpaper is present, but detached with a loss. 319 pages plus 4 pages of Contents and 1 page of advertisements. (Howes W601) AMER/011921.

Leather Bound. 319p. A hardcover leatherbound book in good condition. Covers worn and edges rubbed; some small bits of leather beginning to peel away. The spine has a crackled appearance, and the title plate is difficult to read. The front endpaper is cracked along the hinge, but all pages remain attached. The front endpaper has a few notes and a former owner name in pencil, and the rear free endpaper is loose. The pages are somewhat delicate from age, so that there are chips along the margins of the first and last few pages. Tanning and moderate foxing throughout. All text remains readable and the binding is secure enough for normal handling. Howes W601, Field 1690, Ayer 338, Sabin 104928. The table of contents was printed later and inserted in some copies. From Field's "An Essay Towards an Indian Bibliography" of 1873: "Of this scarce book, very few copies are complete or in good condition. Having been issued in a remote corner of Northwestern Virginia, and designed principally for a local circulation, almost every copy was read by a country fire-side until scarcely legible. Most of the copies lack the table of contents. The author took much pains to be authentic, and his chronicles are considered by Western antiquarians, to form the best collection of frontier life and Indian warfare, that has been printed.".

Withers' book is still one of the primary sources on backwoods life in the Alleghenies and upper Ohio. Theodore Roosevelt (quoted by Larned) called this book "one of the number of books which have a great value because they preserve the traditions of the border about the Indian fighting of the second half of the eighteenth century in the West." This is the best edition, with Thwaites' judicious notes and Draper's excellent Memoir "One of the more circumstantial and gory compilations of Indian warfare" (Streeter).
