Hardcover. Etat : Good. Original antique 1858 leather bound copy of, "The Dispensatory of the United States of America." The book is in fairly good condition with some signs of wear and age. The covers have some scuffing and wear, though the binding is good and sound. There are some handwritten notations to the endpapers and a few additional pages. The back free endpaper is missing a strip along the length of the bottom edge which is about an inch wide. The interior is toned from age with some occasional foxing, soiling and grubbiness. A few pages have some creased corners. Along with that, there may be the very occasional page with some kind of other imperfection, such as a tiny chip or tear, minor wrinkle, etc. The book measures approximately 9 1/8 inches by 5 7/8 inches and is about 3 inches thick. It is 1,583 pages long. ************This book will require additional shipping charges if being sent outside of the United States***********.

While leather is worn it is smooth to touch.

Lippincott and Co.; Philadelphia. Massive volume of 1,704 pages with illustrations and figures. With an Index and Appendices at the back (including "Art of Prescribing Medicines," "Tables of Weights and Measures," "Alphabetical Table of Pharmaceutical Equivalents," "Tables," and "Correspondence Between Different Thermometers"). Full leather binding with four raised bands on the spine. There are advertisements on the front and rear end papers and pastedowns. Condition: Foxing to the covers; one band on the spine has scuffing to the leather; sharp corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. Nice interior - the pages are mostly clean with only some writing in pen at the top edge of page 1,505, a nickel-sized stain spot at the top-right corner of pages 1,505 to 1,520, and 2 small tears/pieces missing at the top-right corner of page 1,513. Pages 1,505 to 1,512 are adhered at the top-right corner. The top-right corner of a blank front end paper has been clipped off. Tanning and light foxing to the end papers and pastedowns; the front end paper has a small stain. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.

These botanicals and chemicals were the basis for medicinal treatment prior to and during the Civil War. The process of extracting and processing the useful part of plants, herbs, flowers, roots, nuts, is described in detail. Inventory #23-053. Price: $250.
