The Pullman Strike began May 11, 1894, and ended on July 20 of that year. Workers at the Pullman Company had suffered wage cuts as a result of the 1893 recession. The largest labor union in the country at that time was the Eugene V. Debs-led American Railway Union. They and the workers at the Pullman Company, organized a Pullman boycott in which members of the the ARU refused to drive trains with Pullman cars .This led to a nation-wide halt in freight and passenger traffic on the railroads. 12,000 federal troops arrived in Chicago to put down the strike, which lead to 30 deaths and 57 injuries, all suffered by members of the strike. Debs and the Union were ultimately charged with obstruction of the United States mail. Chicago, Labor, Railroads, ARU. Studio.
