Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Jacket by F. Slater (illustrateur). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, folds of front flap rubbed and partially detached, spine slightly browned, some slight overall rubbing and time staining, not price clipped (9/6), no incriptions, internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg+ copy for its age and poor wartime paper. 255pp. Set in France after the war amongst the beautiful landscapes of Biarritz, Pau and the Pyrenees, Yates' favourite thriller hero Richard Chandos returns with Jonathan Mansel in a story of temptation, subterfuge, adventure and revenge. Lawyer, actor and author Cecil William Mercer (1885-1960), known by his pen name Dornford Yates, was an English writer and novelist whose novels and short stories, some humorous (the Berry books), some thrillers (the Chandos books), were best-sellers during the pre war and wartime period. The pen name Dornford Yates, first in print in 1910, resulted from combining the maiden names of his grandmothers, the paternal Eliza Mary Dornford and the maternal Harriet Yates. After the Great War Mercer and his wife emigrated to Pau in France, where the climate was kinder to his rheumatism and it was possible to live more cheaply. Just before the fall of France in 1940 Mercer and his second wife managed to escape to South Africa.
