3pp ads. Contemp. maroon roan, bordered in blind, spine lettered & ruled in gilt; extremities rubbed, spine faded, sl. worn & chipped at head & tail, inner hinges splitting but sound. Ink ownership inscription on leading blank: 'Edwin Yewdall, Glass House St., Hunslet'; newspaper clippings laid down on following blank. Copac lists copies at BL, Leeds, Oxford, and York. The owner of this volume is likely to be a relative of the author, as they share a surname and town. John Yewdall, 1795-1856, became a toll collector at Hunslet, a town to the south-east of Leeds, following the depression of the wool trade. He claims in the preface that he wrote the poems 'with a view of exhibiting the various scenes of life, and the reflections which may be produced, by an attentive observation of the occurrences at a Turnpike Gate'.

12mo, pp. xi, 111; uncut in the original drab boards, spine very worn with much loss, but preserving some of the original label. Sole edition, and the author's only book. John Yewdall (1795-1856) was a toll collector at Hunslet, on the outskirts of Leeds. ODNB says that the title poem, which is about life at the turnpike gate, is 'written in the style of Byron's Don Juan', but this is a bit misleading as the rhyme scheme is different (only six lines to a stanza) and the lines have only four feet rather than five - and, although there is some attempt at humour, there is of course, none of the brilliance of Byron. Other poems are the usual mixture of occasional poems, fables, epistles and acrostics. Copac locates only four copies: BL, Bodleian, Leeds and York. Jackson, Annals of English Verse, p. 534; Johnson, Provincial Verse, 999.
